STRENGTHENING SUSTAINABILITY PRACTICES IN BRAZIL

April 7, 2025 – Through our IMPACT Program, the Sucafina Brasil team are working hand-in-hand with coffee farmers to implement projects across key areas of sustainability, from human rights to forest conservation. Today, we’re exploring some of the key initiatives we’re working on in Brazil’s Robusta regions and the impact they are making.

IMPACT is Sucafina’s responsible sourcing program that assures long-term, sustainable performance along every step of Sucafina’s supply chain. As part of our IMPACT Verified program, a key requirement is for farmers to show continuous improvement across a wide range of sustainable practices at each audit. In Brazil, our team have been supporting farmers to meet these improvement indicators through farm visits, workshops and one-on-one consultations with our agronomists.

In 2024, we began expanding the IMPACT Program to Robusta-growing regions of Brazil, particularly in the south of Bahia and Rondônia. Combined with our work in Espírito Santo, we are reaching 300 producers across 400+ IMPACT farms, as of 2025. This year, we expect a 30% increase of IMPACT-verified Robusta, reinforcing our commitment to advancing social, environmental and economic sustainability.

In the south of Bahia, along with our implementing partner Verité, we’re focusing on human rights as part of the wider COFFEE Project. Our team delivered 14 training sessions to more than 80 people, adding value through knowledge-sharing and contributing to continuous improvement in the IMPACT Program.

Meanwhile, in Espírito Santo, the project, ‘Cultivating Rights: Promotion of Fair Work in the Conilon Region’, developed in collaboration with Givaudan  and Solidaridad, is seeing strong results. With support from local cooperatives and NGOs, the first cycle of training began in March and reached more than 70 participants across various municipalities. Activities are underway at four model farms, with a focus on reforestation and improving rural sanitation.

“The expansion of IMPACT demonstrates Sucafina Brasil’s commitment to the Robusta regions in several states,” says Mariana Martins, Sustainability Manager at Sucafina Brasil. “Joint action with local organizations and strategic partners is the best way to support farmers as they align with global regulations like EUDR and seek to incorporate sustainability as a differentiator for their business. It’s very gratifying for us to be part of this transformation, which is already generating strong local results.”

In addition to connecting producers with new markets, IMPACT is also improving transparency and sustainability in the supply chain through deforestation monitoring. Sucafina Brasil collects GPS data on the size and shape of each farm, then overlays it with satellite images of forest cover and forest change to track potential deforestation events.

Strong partnerships with farmers and other organizations are crucial to building a more resilient and transparent coffee supply chain. As we continue expanding our efforts, we’re excited to see their long-term impact.
