GENEVA, SWITZERLAND, March 2, 2022 – A new watershed protection project, led by Cooxupé, Farmer Connect and Sucafina, will create conservation areas that protect springs and watersheds in the region of Mata do Sino, in Brazil.
The Problem
The world has been experiencing the effects of climate change and the Mata do Sino region is no exception. The region and its producers have been experiencing water scarcity for several years. The people living in Mata do Sino’s more urban regions have also been affected by drought and by the availability of water for individual needs.
The Bell Springs Approach
The Bell Springs water conservation project promotes the protection of springs by encouraging producers to establish new conservation zones along waterways. The supporting partners, Cooxupé, Farmer Connect, and Sucafina, will provide seedlings for reforestation and fencing to prevent animals from damaging new planted areas. There will also be trainings for farmers and staff on how to preserve water resources and keep conservation areas.
More vegetation and trees near streams will increase water infiltration and promote more water availability. Plants will also provide natural filtration for water and prevent soil erosion.
Protecting water resources is an essential step towards protecting people and agriculture and we’re proud to be a part of such an important project.
