GENEVA, SWITZERLAND, December 6, 2018 – The Kahawatu Foundation, Sucafina’s sustainability implementer, released its third annual report, which details progress in 2017 on its farmer support activities, including an overview of projects at the planning stage.
Today, coffee plays a crucial role in the lives of millions of people who live below the poverty line and for whom coffee is the main source of income. Affected by climate change and market fluctuations, these coffee growers are struggling to maintain production and quality at profitable levels. This is where the Kahawatu Foundation, a not-for-profit organization established in 2012 in Geneva, Switzerland, can help East African smallholders and their families improve their quality of life and incomes.
“Our Foundation has come a long way since its birth in 2012. In our work with smallholders, we have experienced setbacks but also great successes. Sometimes the least ambitious projects bring about the most immediate impacts,” said Mr. Nicolas A. Tamari, the President of the Foundation.
The 2017 report is organized around three themes that form the main pillars of the Foundation’s mission: agri-business development, community engagement, and eco-sustainable management. It also shows that the challenges of rural development vary greatly not just by country, but also by district, village, and household.
“Key to our success is being able to identify the right partners to work with. In the five years of the Foundation’s existence, we have been privileged to work with many private and institutional donors who share our mission of improving the economic sustainability of coffee farmers,” added Mr. Tamari.
