FOSTERING RESILIENT COFFEE COMMUNITIES IN BRAZIL

July 29, 2025 – In Brazil, we are collaborating with Solidaridad, the international civil society organization, and a brand partner to implement a two-year project in the Conilon (Robusta) region of Espírito Santo. The initiative focuses on promoting labor rights, improving farmers’ and workers’ health and safety, and strengthening environmental protection. By 2026, the project will have reached more than 200 farmers and farm workers.

A core focus is human rights due diligence. Together with our partners, we conducted risk mapping and gap assessments, and supported producers to develop farm-level policies due diligence and compliance processes and codes of conduct. We have also facilitated capacity building sessions on human rights, labor law and responsible business practices.

 Brazil sustainability

The project promotes health and safety of farmers and farm workers by enhancing rural sanitation, safe drinking water and secure pesticide storage on four pilot farms. In addition, 60 farmers and 150 farm workers will take part in trainings on social and environmental legislation, best practices and management tools that ensure that responsible practices are in place and being applied.

Addressing critical environmental challenges in the supply chain is another key component. Alongside workshops on EUDR and Brazilian environmental legislation, we are supporting deforestation risk mapping and monitoring programs. Additionally, more than 2,000 native trees will be planted – a reforestation effort that will support water conservation, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity in the Mata Atlântica biome.

“I am very pleased to be part of this project. The actions promoted have enhanced my skills and knowledge, while improving working conditions and promoting responsible practices that benefit the environment, the community and future generations,” says Amós Casali, a coffee farmer participating in the project.

By addressing labor rights, health and safety and environmental stewardship in tandem, this project is contributing to a more responsible and resilient coffee supply chain. Lessons learned will guide future approaches to human rights due diligence across our operations in Brazil and beyond.
