OPENING DOORS TO LEARNING IN BUIKWE DISTRICT, UGANDA

March 14, 2025 – Students at Kiwale Church of Uganda (COU) Primary School in Uganda’s Buikwe District are benefiting from improved learning facilities built with support from Ugacof – Sucafina’s sister company in Uganda – and the Rotary Club of Bweyogerere Namboole. The new four-classroom block, inaugurated on February 20, 2025, provides a more stable and comfortable environment for young learners.

At Sucafina, we believe that investing in education strengthens coffee communities and creates opportunities for future generations. Through our Caring for People sustainability pillar, we support projects that enhance quality education, and this initiative is a powerful example of how partnerships can make a lasting impact.

Kiwale COU Primary School was founded 20 years ago to improve access to education for children in rural Ngogwe sub-county. Until now, the school had limited learning facilities: students used the church and priest’s house as classrooms, sometimes even studying outdoors while waiting for available space inside.

“With this fully furnished new classroom block, we are providing a more structured and comfortable learning environment for Nursery and Lower Primary students,” the school’s leadership team explained. “This support, along with donations from all partners, will have a lasting impact on the entire community. We pledge to do our part as educators to keep children in school and help them excel in their studies.”

“We’re grateful to all of the stakeholders and partners who contributed to this meaningful cause,” said Michael Nuwagaba, COO of Ugacof and President of the Rotary Club of Bweyogerere Namboole. He also pledged to mobilize additional resources for a second classroom block, allowing the school to expand to the Upper Primary level (up to age 13).

Michael also highlighted the link between education and economic resilience. “When families have stable incomes, they can invest more in their children’s education,” he said. “Coffee farming is a key livelihood in this region and by expanding access to coffee seedlings and training, we are helping households increase their earnings and build a more secure future for themselves and their children.”

“Witnessing this progress firsthand is truly inspiring,” said Max Veglio, Managing Director of Ugacof. “We all share responsibility for the education of our children. I encourage the school and community to take care of these new facilities. This initiative will positively impact the future of the students and motivate us, as partners, to contribute further to the school’s upcoming projects.”

Ugacof’s support of Kiwale COU Primary School reflects our commitment to both education and sustainable livelihoods. By strengthening access to quality education and economic opportunities, we’re helping students, families and coffee communities to build a brighter future.
