Building Brighter Futures in Guatemalan Coffee Communities
This holiday season, on behalf of our valued partners, we are contributing to an initiative that helps coffee growing communities in Guatemala invest in early childhood education.
The Challenge
In Guatemala’s rural coffee regions, lack of classroom infrastructure, including desks and chairs, is a major challenge to learning, especially among preschool-aged children. In some rural coffee growing communities, only around 2 in 10 children attend preschool and just 31% complete elementary school. Without strong early learning foundations, it becomes harder for the next generation to thrive and for coffee communities to build resilient futures.
Our Impact
To disrupt this cycle, we’ve partnered with Seeds for Progress, a non-profit organization dedicated to expanding access to quality education for children in rural regions of Central America.
Together, we’re facilitating safe and inclusive learning environments for preschool-aged children, while reducing risks of child labor and school dropouts in four departments in Guatemala (Chiquimula, Jalapa, Santa Rosa and Guatemala). Our 2025 contribution will help Seeds for Progress:
- Provide furniture and other resources for preschool classrooms.
- Equip teachers with training in child-centered education methods.
- Support ongoing monitoring of child development and learning progress.
Our contribution of US $10,000 will be matched by Macquarie Group, doubling our impact to $20,000. As $2,500 can equip a rural classroom with furniture and $5,000 can help support an entire community school, our joint contribution will help more children in coffee communities to learn, grow and build brighter futures.
