Goats are the gift that keeps giving
This year, Sucafina is giving goats in honor of our valued partners. These goats will go to smallholder farmers in our supply chain in Rwanda and will help increase family incomes, improve coffee quality, and augment family nutrition. But the impact doesn’t stop there. Each year, the offspring of these goats will be given to more farming families within the Sucafina coffee supply chain, benefiting more and more people.
Project Background
Some of the biggest problems that smallholders in Rwanda face can be addressed through goat livestock chains. These problems include soil infertility, lack of fertilizer access, and low family incomes. Goats are relatively easy to care for and can survive on shrubs and trees. They can have an immediate and ongoing impact since they reproduce quickly and each female goat can have several offspring.
Farmers can use goat manure to fertilize their coffee trees, thus increasing yields and quality. Families can drink or sell goat’s milk, creating additional sources of income.
Context
This year, Sucafina is giving approximately 210 goats on behalf of our partners. These goats will be distributed across 6 female and youth cooperative groups and 6 washing stations. Two lead farmers who have been especially engaged in mobilizing community members will also receive goats to begin livestock chains. Kahawatu Foundation and Sucafina Rwanda (RWACOF) will provide initial training on goat husbandry and regular support to farmers involved in the project.
