Let’s Make a Sustainable Impact Together by Planting Trees
We're delighted to announce that, on behalf of our valued partners, we are contributing to an initiative with sustainability at its heart: we are distributing 2,450 tree seedlings on your behalf to farmers in Rwanda, through this Thank My Farmer project.
Project Background
Population growth and climate change are two of the main factors for deforestation in Rwanda. The erratic heavy rains and topography of the hilly land result in soil erosion and landslides, further exacerbating the issue. By distributing tree seedlings to coffee growers, not only do we provide them with an additional yearly revenue opportunity, but we also contribute to mitigating climate change through the reforestation of Rwandan landscapes.
The project is managed on the ground by our sustainability partner, the Kahawatu Foundation. Farmers will receive coffee, shade tree, or macadamia seedlings to plant.
Sucafina is currently working on assessing the carbon sequestration volume per tree and per year for different tree types in Rwanda, but empirical research in different coffee- and macadamia-growing locations seems to indicate the below estimates:
• Coffee – 4.7 kg carbon sequestered per tree per year
• Macadamia – 20 kg carbon sequestered per tree per year
